As we approach the first yahrzeit of David Shapell z”l, we remember his deep commitment to the David Shapell College/Yeshiva Darche Noam and Midreshet Rachel v’Chaya, and the particular pride that he took in our ability to help young men and women build strong Jewish families. As a survivor of the Shoah, he found particularly meaningful the fact that he and Fela’s generosity was instrumental in building hundreds of families for generations to come.
The jewel in the crown of our programs is the Married Couples Program. The program provides young couples the opportunity to learn in the regular Shapell’s and MRC programs, as well as participate in special classes and programs geared to the growth and needs of young couples.
We can think of no greater tribute to mark the occasion of the first yahrzeit of Mr. Shapell, Yosef David ben Binyamin, z”l, than to create the David Shapell z”l Memorial Married Couples Fellowship. The fellowship will provide housing and a full tuition scholarship to a deserving couple that demonstrates both an intense desire for growth in Torah learning and spirituality, as well as a potential to assume positions of leadership in the Jewish community.
Funding for each couple requires $50,000 per year.
We are grateful to Dan and Edna Ritz for leading the way with an initial gift of $8,000!
Dan and Edna know first hand the value of the Married Couples Program, having learned in the program 25 years ago. Dan shared:
“We came to Darche Noam as a newly married couple. We were observant, but really beginners when it came to Torah learning. We were attracted to Darche Noam because of their Couples Program. Our classroom experience was given a crucial added layer as we developed in the program as an emerging Jewish family. There were 13 other couples with us at that time and the experience of being a part of such a committed group of young religious couples was amazing. Looking back on our first 25 years of marriage and appreciating the beautiful family we have built together, I see just how much it has all grown from our start at Darche Noam. I am excited to be able to help another couple receive what we were able to receive, and to honor the memory of David Shapell z”l who made it all possible for us and for so many others”
To make the dream of the David Shapell z”l Memorial Married Couples Fellowship a reality, and to properly pay tribute to the memory of Mr. Shapell, the target date to raise the necessary funds has been set for the date of the first yarzheit at the end of January, 2016. The appreciation expressed to the Shapell family after Mr. Shapell’s passing was truly inspiring. We are now asking you to express that appreciation in a very tangible way, honoring Mr. Shapell’s memory by playing an important part in this project.
