The Program

Finish Moed is a unique on-line chabura with members from Austria, England, the US and Israel. After almost five years in which Rosh Hashana, Baitza, Berachos, Shabbos, Sukkah and Megillah were completed by ten’s of participants, the chabura is now starting maseches Pesachim. 

The goal is for participants to finish Megillah with a clear understanding and multiple chazaros in a realistic, well tested time frame. We learn around 70 daf a year. Following Megillah we will move on to other parts of Moed.

We have attempted to create a chabura feel, with individuals connecting online. This enables participants to tap into the awesome ×›×— הצבור. That  helps practically, as one knows he is “keeping pace” with others and is part of a great group of individuals. Spiritually, the zechus of the צבור is very great. Rabbi Dovid Schoonmaker, Rosh Yeshiva of Shapell’s in Yerushalayim, teaches the shiurim, sets the pace and the chazara schedule. He gives over Torah in a clear, exciting way with high aspirations and realistic implementation. He is the author of the acclaimed sefer Yedias haTorah: Step by Step, a Practical Guide to Retaining Your Learning, and many of the methods of that sefer are employed in this program. The seder of Shas most relevant to many is Moed. The manageable pace and chazara elements of this program speak for themselves and are emphasized in the testimonials below. Finish Moed is a wonderful option for those wanting to move and finish a significant portion of Shas, yet chazar and really understand. Even those joining for just one mesechta can gain so much.

Each week, starting on Motzei Shabbos, 4 shiurim are sent out. Each shiur is between 35-65 minutes and covers around a single amud. The plan is for the shiurim to be sent out from Motzei Shabbos until Wednesday (sometimes Thursday). The shiurim are on the Gemara, many Rashi’s, some Tosfos and other meforshim. 

Around 1 – 2 dapim will be covered per week. 

Additionally, shiurey hosafos are sometimes sent out. These add in depth insights on the week’s material and may cover questions raised by chabura members. Having these as separate shiurim keeps the 4 basic shiurim concise, while allowing those who would like to go deeper to do so.

We go forward for three weeks and chazar for the fourth. Other weeks throughout the year are also dedicated to chazara. 

How to do the program – At 4 sittings over the week participants listen to a shiur, chazar immediately that Gemora and the Gemora of the previous shiur. We assume this will take about 6-7 hours. [4 times 1:15/30 hours]

Of course, someone who can is greatly encouraged to chazar more. If one could dedicate Friday or Sunday morning to chazara it would be wonderful.

One with less time can chazar only that day’s content. Even just listening once has a toeles (as we see from many daf Yomi learners).

Additionally, members are encouraged to ask questions via the whatsapp group. Rabbi Schoonmaker usually answers the questions that he can. Other chabura members may also offer answers.

The bulk of our membership is part of the whatsapp group. This is where Q and A’s get exchanged and the chabura feel is created. We also send all shiurim (but not Q’s and A’s) via e-mail to those who prefer.

We have seen great hatzlacha together so far and look forward to serious minded chaveirim joining this great endeavor. 

 

1 Clarification – this isn’t a program to master seder Moed. Much more time and chazaros would be needed for that. This program would be a great initial step for someone who has the time and desire to do so. All shiurim are available on the Shapell’s website.
